Consider the following case of a man who was traumatized
by the terrorist attacks of 9-11 2001. What feeling reflection
statements would you offer? Summary statements? What open-ended
questions would you ask to collaborate on an action step? Offer
a response to each statement below.
Three
of my friends from church were killed in the Pentagon crash
last week. I'm looking at the wreckage in the center of the
building right now.
I keep
having nightmares that the terrorists come to "finish the
job." It probably doesn't help that I sit glued to the TV
all the time.
I cry
all the time. Sometimes I shake. I just can't concentrate
on my work. And I can't call in sick anymore. I could lose
my job.
My job
seems so pointless in the light of things. How do I cope
with this stuff? I don't know what to do.
Yes, I
miss my friends. Especially Jason. We were golfing partners.
He has two beautiful girls. He was such a calm and caring
person. And we were in a men's Bible Study together.
I know
it's not right, but whenever I see an Arab I think of Bin
Laden and his terrorist cells. They're so evil.
What's
going on with me? When will I be back to normal? What should
I do?
I haven't
done anything to help myself. I just watch TV and cry and
try to sleep. And now I go to work. I live alone.
I haven't
told anyone at church. I do have other friends. I guess
I've been scared to get close to anyone. Three of my friends
are gone now.
I haven't
wanted anyone to know how upset I am. I mean I'm okay. I'm
alive. I'm healthy. I shouldn't be so upset by this.
Yeah,
I guess it is hard to lose your friends. And it all happened
so close to me.
Maybe
I should talk to my pastor or go to a counselor. I need to
get through this.
I'm so
glad that you answered my call! You're the first person I've
talked to about how it's really going for me. Could you pray
for me?
