New Hope
CE Exam: Role Play with Rudy
February
2003
William
Gaultiere, Ph.D.
In real
life Rudy is someone who lives and cares with God's pleasure.
I know this because I've heard him speak at the Crystal Cathedral.
And in the movie "Rudy" which tells part of his story you
see the zeal that he lives with. Imagine that he called or
chatted with New Hope about his desire to go to Notre Dame
University. Consider the background information and sample
comments by Rudy below and then offer some possible New Hope
Counselor responses at different points in the conversation
as indicated below. (You may want to use the "A-B-C's of
New Hope Counseling Checklist" to guide you.)
Background
Rudy's
best friend has just died in a steel mill accident where he
and his brother work for their father. Now he's waiting at
the train station with a duffle bag packed for Notre Dame
to fulfill his dream of going to school and playing football
for the "Fighting Irish."
Re-cap
of the movie scene
Rudy:
"Dad! What are you doing here?"
Rudy's
father: ".Chasing a stupid dream causes you and everyone around
you nothing but heartache. Notre Dame is for rich kids.
Smart kids. Great athletes. You're a Rudiger."
Beginning
of the New Hope call/chat: Active Listening
Rudy:
"It took a crisis, but I'm finally going for it and trying
to get into Notre Dame so I can play football for the `Fighting
Irish.' And my father is really against this."
