A New
Hope caller opens her conversation by saying: "I need to go
to work this morning, but I just can't face my co-worker.
Our desks are right next to each other and she just ignores
me. She won't talk to me. She doesn't even look at me.
And she's been telling lies about me to other people in the
office."
Consider
each of the following initial counselor responses below and
to what extent they are helpful or hindering to the caller.
Rate each response by placing a mark somewhere on the line.

Write
in your counselor responses to each chatter/caller statement.
Then evaluate your responses using the "A-B-C's of New Hope
Counseling Checklist." Next week I'll give you the complete
transcript with helpful responses from the New Hope Counselor.
Chatter:
My wife is not able to cope with her 87-year-old mother, who
keeps saying she wants to go to sleep forever.
Chatter:
The stress from her mother is making my wife ill. She is
having to take nerve pill for high blood pressure.
Chatter:
I have my own problems, but not that effect me every day.
My wife needs to know if what she is doing is right or wrong.
She believes that God is not ready to take her mother because
she is not with him yet.
Chatter:
My wife doesn't want to feel that she didn't do everything
she could for her. Her mother is not deathly ill, just tired.
We would like to get mom closer to God. We go with her to
a service at her rest home every Sunday.
Chatter:
At the Sunday service she just sits there and doesn't seem
to care about what is going on.
Chatter:
She is quiet and only talks when she wants something. In
the past we had great times together, and when I retired we
all decided to move to Las Vegas.
Chatter:
We will talk to some of our Christian friends here in Las
Vegas. We will let them know of the struggles we are having
with mom.
Chatter:
Are there any good books on this subject?
Chatter: This is our first time to visit New Hope, so we
will look at the books described on your web site. God bless
you
